Windrock Trail 22: Rocks, Mud, and Appalachian History
A rugged Tennessee trail led to an unexpected reminder of the coal-mining families who lived in these mountains.
Windrock Park in Tennessee offered a full day of off-road adventure on Trail 22. Before hitting the trail, we stopped at the Windrock General Store for local insight, aired down the Jeep tires, and prepared for rocky climbs, mud, and off-camber terrain. The trail was a challenge in its own right, but the most memorable discovery came near the end: a historic cemetery where coal miners and their families were laid to rest. It was a powerful reminder that these mountains have stories beyond the trails we drive today.
